Reviews the coinage of Aphilas (seen as a contemporary of Licinius), an elaborate system of ten denominations which had to be differentiated typologically. The four golds (1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8) were augmented by two fractions in silver at suggested values of 1/24 (with gold inlay) and 1/48, all based on the lowest measurable weight unit, the chalkous.

Discusses a late dating of the conversion to Christianity (360), the reduction in standard of the coins assumed to to have been struck under Ezana's name posthumously and the introduction of a second, heavier copper denomination by his successor Ouazebas, which combines his image with a possible representation of the deceased Ezanas in a gilt halo on the reverse.
